Bridgewater

Welcome back to insider town tours and today we are featuring Bridgewater, New Jersey, a vibrant town nestled in the heart of Somerset County. From its rich history to its modern amenities and natural beauty, Bridgewater offers a diverse tapestry of experiences for the 47,000 residents and visitors alike. Join us on a journey as we explore all that this charming community has to offer.

Founded in 1749, Bridgewater boasts a storied past that is evident in its well-preserved landmarks and historic districts. The area that is now known as Bridgewater was originally inhabited by the Lenape Native American tribe. European settlement began in the late 17th century, with the arrival of Dutch and English settlers. The Dutch established the Raritan Dutch Reformed Church in the 1690s, which still stands today as the oldest church building in Somerset County.

Take a leisurely stroll through downtown Bridgewater to admire the beautifully restored buildings, or visit the Van Horne House, a historic gem that dates back to the Revolutionary War era. The story has been passed down that it was at the Middlebrook encampment the first official flag of the United States was unfurled, after law to adopt a national flag had been passed by Congress on June 14, 1777. By order of Congress, a Thirteen Star Flag is flown 24 hours a day at the Washington Camp Ground, a part of the former Middlebrook encampment, located in Bridgewater. Bridgewater played a significant role in the American Revolution. The Battle of Bound Brook, a minor engagement during the war, occurred in what is now the Bound Brook section of Bridgewater in April 1777. General George Washington and his troops retreated through Bridgewater after their defeat at the Battle of Princeton.

But Bridgewater is not just a place of battle; it’s a bustling hub of culture and commerce. In the 19th century, Bridgewater transitioned from an agrarian community to a more industrialized area. Mills and factories were established along the Raritan River, harnessing its water power for industries like textiles and paper production. Its location along important transportation routes contributed to its growth. The Delaware and Raritan Canal, completed in the 1830s, facilitated transportation of goods between Philadelphia and New York City. The construction of the Central Railroad of New Jersey in the mid-19th century further improved transportation. Then construction of highways such as Interstate 287 and Interstate 78 made the township more accessible and contributed to its growth as a residential area. Which is around the same time it became famously known for the Bridgewater Mall.

Explore the town’s diverse dining scene, where you can savor everything from international cuisine to classic American fare. And with a variety of local boutiques, malls, and specialty stores, Bridgewater offers endless dining opportunities for every taste and preference. There is Seasons 52….Redstone Grill……Maggiano’s Little Italy……Cheesecake Factory…..Reeyugin Sushi……and the renowned and recently redone, Bridgewater Diner

Bridgewater has many neighborhood bars and lounges for a fun night out and possibly a tough next morning. These local hot spots include; The Bradford Rooftop (my personal favorite), Tommy’s Tavern & Tap, Green Knoll Grill, and Buffalo Wild Wings. Which are only just some of the options that show the array of night life Bridgewater has to offer.

Outdoor enthusiasts will delight in Bridgewater’s abundance of parks, trails, and recreational facilities. Explore the scenic beauty of Washington Valley Park, where hiking and biking trails wind through lush forests and along sparkling streams. Or head to Duke Island Park for picnicking, fishing, and kayaking amidst serene natural surroundings.  But we can’t forget about the kids! There is the Kidstreet playground located near Slattery Park.  For the more athletic activities, Bridgewater is home to a Municipal Turf Field, and the Prince Rodgers Baseball Complex which, for years, has been hosting the future players of baseball.  If you’re not a fan of baseball one can also find two golf courses, the Green Knoll Golf Course which is open to the public and the private Raritan Valley Country Club or even a tennis club right next to the Green Knoll Golf Club! Let’s not forget about Life Time Fitness or Gold’s Gym who have also helped to keep many of the town’s residents healthy.  Lifetime fitness actually even has a nice outdoor pool for families to use and they offer “Parents night out” child care services on saturday nights from 5pm-8pm.  I might sign up today now that i THink about it.

Bridgewater also knows how to come together and celebrate. Throughout the year, residents and visitors alike can enjoy a variety of community events and festivals. From summer concerts in the park to holiday parades and farmers’ markets, there’s always something happening in Bridgewater to bring people together and create cherished memories.

Education and culture are also thriving in Bridgewater, thanks to its top-rated schools and cultural institutions. The Bridgewater-Raritan Regional School District is known for its excellence in academics, athletics, and the arts, providing students with a well-rounded education for its nearly 2800 students. But let’s not forget to mention their great, middle schools and intermediate schools. Additionally, the Somerset County Library System’s Bridgewater branch offers a wealth of resources, programs, and events for residents of all ages.

Bridgewater is a town with a strong sense of community, where residents actively participate in local organizations and volunteer initiatives. From neighborhood associations to charitable groups, there are countless opportunities to get involved and make a difference in the lives of others. A big impact on the community comes from the town’s very own Minor League Baseball team the Somerset Patriots, who for years has offered an affordable fun family friendly environment and opportunities for local organizations to shine. Quite a few of the players have gone on to make big names on the New York Yankees which is the Patriots affiliate major league team!
