While also being home to a New Jersey Staple, Montclair University, but we’ll get more into education later on in the video. Montclair offers residents a perfect mix of suburban tranquility and urban energy. Its population of nearly 40,000 enjoys access to top-notch schools, a bustling downtown area, and an easy commute to New York City—just 14 miles away! It’s no wonder Montclair is a prime choice for professionals and families alike.
Long before European settlement began, the region now known as Montclair was part of the Lenape Native Americans’ homeland. They hunted, trapped, and traversed the mountains to gather shellfish along the coast. In 1679, Dutch settlers purchased land from the Lenape west of the Passaic River and north of Newark, a deal later ratified by the British government.
In the early 1700s, John Speer, a member of the Dutch community, built a home that still stands today on Upper Mountain Avenue, just north of Montclair’s border. Other Dutch settlers established farms in what is now the northern part of Montclair, creating a community known as Speertown. The construction of Valley Road further connected these settlements.
As New York businessmen and their families began building homes along the mountainside, the population grew rapidly. They envisioned Montclair as a model “country town” with easy access to the city, a vision embraced by an artist colony that began to form in the 1870s, led by notable landscape painter George Inness.
Dedicated community leaders invested in quality schools, an outstanding public library, a distinguished art museum, and influential churches, shaping Montclair into a vibrant community of around 39,000 residents today. While it remains family-oriented, Montclair is not just a “bedroom community.” Its rich educational heritage is reflected in innovative public and private school programs, as well as expanded offerings at Montclair State University.
Once again, the hillsides have become a haven for artists and writers. This historic community, with its many charming old homes, continues to thrive, embracing the spirit of contemporary life as it enters a new century.
The homes here are just as impressive. Whether you’re looking for a classic colonial, a modern townhouse, or something in between, Montclair has something for everyone. Many properties even offer scenic views, adding to the town’s appeal. Montclair is considered an affluent suburban area with just over 16,000 homes and only 120 rentable properties; it seems that people that are living here are in for the long run. That’s reflected in the quality of care the residents put into their homes and lands.
Stroll down Bloomfield Avenue or Church Street, and you’ll find everything from trendy boutiques and coffee shops to some of New Jersey’s best restaurants. Montclair is known for its vibrant arts scene, with galleries, theaters, and live music venues, making it a cultural hub for locals. There are tons of activities all over town. For example we have; The Gravity Vault. An indoor rock climbing facility that’s good for all levels of rock climbing enthusiasts or first timers. A little way down the road we have Monster Mini Golf. A completely indoor and glow in the dark mini golf course that offers a fun year long alternative for gatherings and parties. If you aren’t feeling physically active you can always go over to the Montclair Art Museum to be more mentally active. They offer rotating exhibitions and private tours and children under 12 are free.
The Town is filled with quite a few nice parks; 175 acres worth of park to be exact. Topping off the list is the Van Vleck House and Gardens; The Van Vleck House & Gardens is a serene oasis in Montclair, treasured for its natural beauty and rich history. Originally established as a private estate by Joseph Van Vleck in 1868, this grand Italianate villa is now surrounded by 12 acres of beautifully maintained gardens, open year-round for the public to explore at no cost. Visitors can stroll along pathways that meander through formal gardens, shaded woodland areas, and vibrant seasonal displays. Committed to horticultural education and preservation, Van Vleck House & Gardens hosts community events, garden tours, and workshops, making it a cherished destination for both locals and tourists. For something a little more simple you can head over to Edmont Memorial Park or Anderson Park and explore their well maintained trails and playground sets. With other amenities like restrooms and tables they make a great meeting spot for many occasions.

Eagle Rock Reservation is a 408-acre county park that spans Montclair, Verona, and West Orange. At around 618 feet above sea level, this park offers breathtaking views of the Manhattan skyline and Essex County’s Orange Valley. The historic Highlawn Pavilion, set in a century-old building within the reservation, provides fine dining and is a popular venue for weddings and events. Visitors can enjoy picnic areas, a moving 9/11 memorial, a baseball field, a charming Victorian-style gazebo, and a variety of trails perfect for walking, biking, running, and horseback riding. Education is a cornerstone of the community, with Montclair Public Schools consistently ranked among the best in New Jersey. And, of course, Montclair State University, a renowned institution recognized for its academic excellence, is right here, offering both in-state and out-of-state students a great education at an affordable price. The Public school system has 10 schools within its systems; 6 elementary schools, 3 middle schools, and that all comes together in one highschool with an 11:1 student to teacher ratio all across the school board. That’s a really impressive ratio.
One cannot discuss Montclair and education and not mention “Montclair State University” Montclair State University, located in the heart of Montclair, NJ, is a dynamic institution known for its commitment to academic excellence and community engagement.
